Taking care of your new tattoo is easy!

Congratulations on your new tattoo! What do you do next? I’ve got the details, read below…

  • Keep it clean: Wash the tattoo 2–3 times a day with mild, unscented antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. Gently pat dry with a clean cloth or paper towel, but don't rub. Always wash your hands before touching your fresh tattoo.

  • Keep it hydrated: Apply a small amount of fragrance-free moisturizer or ointment after washing to keep the tattoo moist. You can use an alcohol-free healing ointment such as Aquaphor for the first 2–3 days, then switch to a regular unscented moisturizer. Some recommendations include Eucerin, Tattoo Goo, coconut oil, shea butter, or cocoa butter (my personal favorite.) Avoid lotions with color or fragrance, as well as harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin.

  • Keep it protected: Avoid direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks, and after that, use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when in direct sunlight. Don't submerge the tattoo in water, and avoid picking or scratching it, which can cause infection or scarring. For the first 2 weeks, wear clean, soft clothing over the tattoo that isn't abrasive or irritating. You should also avoid letting anyone else touch the tattoo until it's healed.
